Becoming a prosecutor in Norway

The question · Asked in October 2026

“What are the requirements to become a prosecutor in Norway? Is there any special requirement for a person originally come from Iran? Is a security clearance a must-have?”

Summary of the answer

Straffeprosessloven §§ 55 a–57 require a Norwegian law degree and an extended police certificate; statsadvokater must be Norwegian citizens (Grunnloven § 114), and no rule singles out a country of origin. Security clearance depends on the post (sikkerhetsloven § 8-1); refusals can be appealed, and from 1 January 2027 a central clearance directorate takes over these decisions for the civilian sectors (FOR-2026-10-16-2069), on the same criteria.
