Compensation after a police search

The question · Asked in October 2026

“I rented out my second apartment to someone else. I have no idea what he was doing there. Police came and broke the door for investing a crime. Could I ask the compensation from police?”

Summary of the answer

Straffeprosessloven § 448 lets people other than the suspect be compensated for search damage when reasonable, without showing police fault; HR-2014-2260-U confirms that such third parties can be compensated under § 448. Under § 449 the claim goes to the police district; an adopted 2026 amendment will send it to Statens sivilrettsforvaltning.
